Chenango County

Chenango County’s rich rural landscape stretches across fertile farm fields, dairy pastures, and historic small towns like Norwich. Local producers supply everything from artisan dairy to seasonal vegetables, contributing to New York’s agricultural strength. Still, distance from grocery hubs and economic challenges can make it difficult for residents to access fresh, healthy food consistently. Project FoodBox is working alongside community partners to strengthen healthy food access in Chenango County, helping families connect with nutritious, locally grown ingredients year-round.

Our seamless solutions take a holistic approach, promoting healthier communities while supporting sustainable agriculture.

Chenango County's Agricultural Heritage

Chenango County’s fertile uplands and river valleys once sustained Haudenosaunee villages cultivating the Three Sisters, harvesting nuts, medicinal plants, and fish from abundant waterways. European settlement brought dairy herds, sheep, hops, and grain production, shaping a proud farm economy that endures in pastureland and small family dairies. Yet despite deep agricultural roots, modern food access remains uneven in rural pockets. Local pride in land and heritage drives initiatives to restore pathways to healthy, regionally grown foods for all residents.

“Medically tailored” refers to food that is selected and portioned based on a person’s specific health condition, dietary restrictions, and nutritional needs — all designed to support clinical outcomes and overall wellness.

Each box includes a variety of fresh produce, whole grains, and other nutrient-rich items. The selection may vary based on the season and availability, but all items are chosen with health and freshness in mind.
