Cortland County's Agricultural Heritage
The indigenous stewards of present-day Cortland County nurtured maize fields alongside squash, beans, and medicinal crops, relying on forest game and fresh streams. Settlers later transformed the county into a dairy and grain leader, its fields supporting butter, cheese, and hay production for generations. Today, pastoral farmland still defines the region, yet food access varies from village centers to rural hillsides. Community commitment to preserving agricultural traditions inspires the movement to expand nutritious food access across Cortland County.
