Richmond County's Agricultural Heritage
Staten Island’s indigenous Lenape residents cultivated crops and gathered shellfish, wild fruits, and herbs from fertile shores and forests. European settlers later established orchards, dairies, and truck farms that supplied New York City. Though much land has since been urbanized, community gardens and small farms echo the island’s agrarian roots. Addressing food-access challenges today continues that legacy of local nourishment and community resilience.
