Rockland County's Agricultural Heritage
Indigenous Munsee Lenape communities once cultivated beans, corn, and squash and gathered wild fruits and shellfish along the Hudson. As agriculture expanded under European settlement, orchards, dairies, and gardens filled Rockland’s hills and riverfronts. Today, agriculture plays a smaller role, yet its legacy endures in local markets and community gardens. Efforts continue to ensure that nutritious food is accessible to all residents across Rockland’s diverse communities.
