Steuben County

Steuben County’s agricultural heritage runs deep, with dairy operations, crop farms, and family-run markets spread across miles of scenic countryside. Despite this production strength, residents in rural towns and villages may experience limited access to fresh food options, particularly without nearby grocery infrastructure. Project FoodBox supports Steuben County families by delivering nutritious, farm-fresh foods directly into the community, helping people eat well while supporting local producers.

Our seamless solutions take a holistic approach, promoting healthier communities while supporting sustainable agriculture.

Steuben County's Agricultural Heritage

Indigenous farmers once cultivated corn and medicinal plants across what is now Steuben County, supplementing their diets with hunting, fishing, and gathering wild berries and roots. Settlers expanded the region’s agricultural base with dairy farms, orchards, hops, and hayfields. While agriculture remains central to Steuben County’s character, contemporary challenges mean not all residents can easily access fresh foods. Rooted in the county’s farming heritage, local efforts focus on ensuring healthy, local nourishment for all.

Addressing Food Waste and Nourishing Steuben County

Steuben County’s agricultural landscape produces dairy, vegetables, and meat, yet not all residents have equal access to this local abundance. With rising food costs and transportation challenges, nutritious food can be out of reach — even as edible products go to waste statewide. Project FoodBox connects farmers and families to reduce waste, improve health, and fuel a more sustainable and equitable food system in Steuben County.

Project FoodBox is a medically tailored grocery delivery program that provides fresh, nutritious food to patients as part of their healthcare journey. We work with healthcare providers to ensure food supports treatment plans and health outcomes.

Patients are referred to Project FoodBox by their healthcare provider or plan. Once enrolled, eligible individuals receive regular deliveries of fresh produce and other nutritious items tailored to their specific health needs.

Eligibility depends on your health insurance provider, care plan, and medical condition. Typically, individuals managing chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension may qualify through a Medi-Cal CalAIM referral.

“Medically tailored” refers to food that is selected and portioned based on a person’s specific health condition, dietary restrictions, and nutritional needs — all designed to support clinical outcomes and overall wellness.

Each box includes a variety of fresh produce, whole grains, and other nutrient-rich items. The selection may vary based on the season and availability, but all items are chosen with health and freshness in mind.

Customization depends on your care plan and provider. While some flexibility may be available, the contents are generally selected to meet medical and nutritional guidelines that support your specific health goals.
