Each week, thousands of Imperial County residents with chronic health conditions are receiving boxes of fresh, locally grown produce delivered directly to their homes through Project Food Box — a program built on the idea that good nutrition is healthcare. Since its launch during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative has expanded to 26 California counties, delivered over 8 million produce boxes, and not only provides disease-managing foods but also gives recipes, education, and support to encourage lasting dietary change. The program also helps farmers by giving value to crops that might otherwise go to waste, while serving as a model for integrating food as medicine into public health and managed care systems.
